That care extends into genre execution — the chosen-sibling hook (an ordinary grandfather revealed as the legendary Knight Rider MAR) is a familiar chassis, but West earns the reader's investment by grounding it first in grief and injustice (the burial, Elder Cuthbert's cruelty, the unexplained deaths of Kelisa's parents) before the wonder arrives. The tonal turn — from a village funeral to a dragon-mount recruiting party — is handled with control, and Tif's chatter ("I might die"/"That was before I flew all day") keeps the wonder feeling lived-in rather than expository.
