The Magical Singing Egg cover

The judge's reasoning

The Magical Singing Egg is a quiet picture book about a small boy who learns that the thing he loves most can only be kept by letting it go. That is a big idea for a book this short, and Mark Magner earns it with remarkable restraint.

The emotional center is the boy's own change. In the opening spreads he is a four-year-old who twists backward from a taxi "reaching for one last bird," and who chases the hens until they stop laying. When he finds the glowing egg, the text shifts: "For once, I forgot about running. I knelt perfectly still." That stillness is the book's turning point. The crowd scene that follows, with cameras flashing, coins clinking, and the egg's song growing "smaller beneath all that excitement," lets young readers feel what the boy feels without ever being told to. His line, "I could breathe," when he carries the egg back to the quiet candlelit room, is the kind of small, true sentence children remember.

The payoff is beautifully paced. Grandfather's gentle "Not everything that disappears is gone" plants the seed (literally, with a potato plant in his hand), and the rooster's return on the fence, "painted in the colors of the egg," delivers wonder and comfort at once. The boy's final act, opening his arms and waiting rather than lunging, shows the lesson as behavior, not sermon.

The closing image, reaching toward the chickens again but not chasing, "But I thought about it," gives a young listener a laugh after the lump in the throat. The memoir-flavored Irish setting, with its thatch, stream-water and hay wagon, gives the book a lived-in warmth that makes it a lovely read-aloud for a grandparent and child together.

Supporting passages

Emotional Resonance
"The shell was warm in my muddy hands. A tiny curl of music seemed to hover around it. For once, I forgot about running. I knelt perfectly still."

The boy's transformation from chaser to keeper is captured in a single quiet beat that a child can feel without it being explained.

Theme & Substance
"I opened my arms and waited. The rooster hopped down and came straight to me. I held him gently, and he settled against my chest. When he was ready, I let him go."

The lesson that gentleness and patience bring what grabbing never could is delivered as action, not moral, and ends with the generous act of letting go.

Plot & Structure
"I twisted around, laughing, and reached toward the chickens. I did not chase them. But I thought about it."

The ending rhymes with the opening taxi image, closing the arc with growth and a touch of humor.
