Neurodiversity Decoded cover

The judge's reasoning

This is a handbook built to be used at 2 AM, and it works as one. Verdier's central design choice is that the reader never has to read cover to cover. Each chapter splits into a Quick Guide, a Deeper Understanding section and an In Practice section, with worksheets, Family Reflection questions and Next Steps behind them. A parent in crisis can go straight to the scripts. A parent with an evening free can read the neuroscience. That architecture is the book's strongest quality, and it serves its reader.

The practical material is where the book earns its keep. The scripts are concrete enough to try the same day. The "Yes, when..." reframe turns a flat refusal into a condition. The 'sort the facts from the worries' columns come with a coping plan attached. The Drama Triangle chapter plays each scenario twice, once as the Rescuer/Persecutor/Victim spiral and once as the coaching alternative. It even predicts the "extinction burst" a parent should expect when they stop rescuing. In the dinosaur and Minecraft examples, the child's own interest carries the math, literacy and executive-function work.

The book is also personal, and that is why it is trusted. The Prologue is unsparing. It covers eight years of failed therapies, the wilderness programs, the ten days in a psychiatric hospital, and the author's own codependence ("the house smelled like a weed factory"). Everything after it reads as hard-won rather than theoretical.

My reservations are real but secondary. Some neuroscience passages overreach and turn purple, and a few claims would benefit from fuller sourcing. The medication and school-law material is useful orientation, not a substitute for professional advice. But as a working manual for parents of neurodivergent children, it delivers what its readers came for.

Supporting passages

Genre Execution
"Your child may not be giving you a hard time — they may be having a hard time."

A single reframe that captures the book's whole approach and that a parent can carry into the next meltdown.

Emotional Resonance
"The hardest conversation I've ever had was telling him he could no longer live with me unless he was willing to follow the rules."

The author's willingness to name her own enabling gives the book its credibility and emotional weight.

Dialogue
"Parent: "I can hear you're really disappointed and angry. And the answer is still no until homework is done. We can talk more about this when you're feeling calmer.""

A usable script that validates the feeling, holds the boundary and refuses the power struggle.
