Edwards's real gift here is period reconstruction — not fantastical world-building, but the equally demanding work of making 1969 Whittier feel lived-in and specific. The Friendly Cue's seven pool tables, the jukebox playing Johnny Cash, the hippie clerk pretending to read his Batman comic, Bob's Big Boy chili spaghetti, the AR4 speakers and Marantz receiver catalogued down to the model number — this is a novel that trusts sensory density to do the work of atmosphere, and it largely succeeds. Turnbull Canyon itself, with its switchbacks 'like a great black snake,' Hell's Gate, and the abandoned asylum grounds, becomes a genuinely eerie geography before a single overt supernatural beat lands, which is exactly the patience good folk-horror requires.

That groundwork pays dividends in characterization: five POV threads (Nick, Ham, Harry, Imelda, and the Prologue's doomed Hampton III) are each given distinct interior furniture rather than being mouthpieces for plot. Harry Roach's quiet obsession with the cold Margaret Stewart case, conveyed through his exacting breakfast ritual and his sudden, greedy interest in a surf magazine cover that resembles a ghost from his own past, is a lovely bit of restrained characterization — a man's grief and detective hunger showing through habit rather than exposition. Imelda's longing for her absent Spanish father, rehearsed in imagined Spanish greetings, gives her thread real interior stakes. The doubling of 'Margo' across 1943, 1969, and the Prologue's uncanny impersonator is a promising structural hook that rewards close reading rather than announcing itself.

The book knows its era and its place, and it makes both feel worth haunting.
