Hey, Giraffe

Hey, Giraffe is a concept picture book built on a simple, sturdy engine: a curious child (or narrator) asks the giraffe a question, and the giraffe answers in first person. That structure does a lot of quiet work — it turns a fact sheet into a conversation, which is exactly what makes it land for the toddler-to-early-reader crowd this is aimed at.

What impresses me most is how much real, specific animal knowledge gets folded into so few words. The rhymes are loose rather than tight, and that's a real feature to flag — some couplets ('trees'/'be,' 'sight'/'bite') land cleanly, others don't scan as neatly. But the fact density and the warmth of the closing address are exactly what a giraffe-obsessed four-year-old wants from a bedtime book.
