Frostbite

Frostbite knows exactly who it's for: a child living through the specific, current terror of a parent being taken by immigration enforcement, and the adult who has to sit with them and find words. That clarity of purpose is the book's real achievement. Rather than staying abstract about 'big feelings,' Hall builds a genuine tool-kit into the narrative — Pasco the puffin's balloon breath ("take a deep breath, hold it, then let the air leak out slowly") and the mama-taught Butterfly Hug ("Cross your flippers like this and slowly tap your shoulders. Right and left. Right and left. Right and left") are lifted almost directly from trauma-informed practice, but they're delivered by characters a child can love first and learn from second. That's the craft trick of good bibliotherapy: the technique arrives inside the relationship, not instead of it.

The emotional through-line is honest without being graphic — Miguel's papa is taken by a serpent who says "I am taking you back to where you came from," and Miguel's own confession, "It hurts so badly it stings like frostbite," gives the title real weight instead of leaving it decorative. Polar Bear Paulo's line — "your hearts are always together" — is exactly the kind of reassurance a displaced or separated child needs to hear stated plainly.

This isn't a book chasing narrative sophistication; it's a book chasing usefulness, and on that axis, with a clinical psychologist's endorsement backing it, it delivers precisely what it promises to the reader who needs it most.
