West builds her mystery on a foundation of real grief, and that choice pays off. The opening chapter doesn't rush toward the supernatural — it lingers on Corii's anger at Eddie for hiding his cancer, on the White Castle hamburgers that taste 'exactly as I remembered,' on the trees she and her grandfather planted still standing after the family house burned. These are small, unglamorous griefs, and they earn the bigger uncanny beats that follow. The bedroom Eddie secretly built for her — headboard shelves with raised edges because she once mentioned it, the Ohio quilt she admired years ago, her own photographs chosen and hung on his walls — is the emotional core of this opening, and it's genuinely well constructed: a physical space that proves love without a single line of dialogue about it. 'He hoped you'd visit' lands harder for being so plain.

The house itself is the second strength — a genuinely creepy structure with hallways that don't measure out, a four-foot cavity behind paneling holding only broken jars and dust, a third floor no one is allowed to enter, and a family (Isaac, sharing Corii's exact wolf-ringed eyes) gathered by a man who clearly knew something none of them are saying. The slow accretion of small wrongness — Aunt Lila's visitors who arrive but are never seen leaving, the light in a de-electrified attic — is patient, folkloric world-building that trusts atmosphere over exposition. The mirrored dread in Nate's own chapter, watching that same window from his truck, extends the unease convincingly beyond a single unreliable narrator.
