The judge's reasoning

This is a book that knows exactly who it's for: a small child who loves a dog, and the grown-up reading beside them. Cadie narrates in a bright, trusting first-person voice, and the warmth never wavers because it comes from something real. The emotional spine is quiet but unmistakable. Cadie is a rescue dog from Texas who finds her family, and the book's gentlest moment is its final adventure: "My other favorite adventure isn't much of an adventure at all!" After hikes and waterfalls and a world's-biggest scoop of peanut butter ice cream, the thing that makes her proudest is sitting on the back deck, "protecting them and making sure the house and yard are safe." That's the book's whole heart: belonging is the real adventure.

The voice carries it. Cadie is delightfully doglike in her priorities (squirrels she can't quite climb after, a leash that wraps around Mommy during keep-away, a sneeze from waterfall splash), and the small details feel observed rather than invented. There's also a lovely piece of child-safety craft tucked in: Cadie is happy when kids "ask my Mommy and Daddy if it is okay to pet me instead of running up to me—because that is very scary." That's good manners and dog-awareness taught from the dog's point of view, with no lecture attached.

The structure is a gentle episodic scroll of outings, which suits the bedtime read-aloud and the very young. The closing invitation toward adopting a rescue animal lands as an offer, not a sermon. A charming, sincere debut with a real mission behind it.

Characterization
"Sometimes, I try to play with the squirrels by climbing their tree! I don't make it very far!"

A single self-deprecating line gives Cadie a funny, endearing, distinctly doglike personality.

Theme & Substance
