Alfheim Resurrections knows exactly what its readers want and delivers it with unfussy confidence. This is portal-fantasy comfort food executed with real care for genre mechanics: a grieving young hero with escalating powers, an elder council fretting over decorum, a villain plotting modernization of an ancient war, and a magic system with consistent internal rules (the seventh-son healing lineage, the Connleodh sword as a legitimacy talisman, the sídhe's masking touch). Nilsen doesn't reinvent the wheel, but he keeps it round and spinning — the pacing moves briskly from Timothy's grief-haunted return to New Hampshire, through the visceral gut-punch of Aarif's beating and healing, into the political machinery of Sídhlin's Elder Council, without losing momentum.
The strongest genre beat is the Hollister confrontation in Chapter 2 — Timothy's barely-restrained power on display, the picture window exploding 'like a boulder,' the calculated menace of 'I'm done with your kind.' It reads like a scene a genre reader will remember, precisely because it lets the fantasy element (a teenager who can casually demolish a wealthy bully's study) serve a very human grievance: racist arson against Omar's immigrant family. That's speculative execution in service of stakes readers recognize.
The world-building is layered with genuine attention — Cadwaladr's flatscreen TV beside his cane and ancient grudges, Wiktor's pitch for 'modern methods,' the eerie measured time of Sláine ('the sun has risen thirteen times') — small details that make Sídhlin and its politics feel lived-in rather than sketched. The gunfire breaking into elven woods is a well-placed tonal shock that earns its 'declaration of war' weight.
