a three body solution

A sentence either earns its breath or it doesn't, and I'll say plainly that most of these do not — the prose here runs on adrenaline and alliteration rather than restraint. But I don't award Originality lightly, and this book has it in abundance, of a specific and unrepeatable kind. Breniman has built a genuinely strange invention at the center of his utopia — the MMMurphyBed, 'a two-room deluxe Murphy bed system' that funds a political revolution through slip-and-slide attachments and gold-plated luxury models sold to the ultra-rich before being handed to Costco for the masses. That's not a metaphor borrowed from elsewhere; it's a wholly own idea, tracked through to its logistical and comic consequences (BDSM cuffs pulled from market after 'a most unfortunate test run,' the bed's insurance-lobbying arc). The bonobo-versus-chimp governance premise, the Yo-BoNoBo-Ga curriculum with its toe-dexterity Nobel laureates, and the reclaimed 'Ring Around the Rosie' — rewritten as 'Gather all you homos! / Pockets full of potions' — show a writer willing to follow an idea all the way to its logical, ridiculous, and occasionally moving conclusion. The world-building payoff lines ('international crime rates dropped by 37%,' Wall Street quitting for 'urban permaculture farms') have the specific, deadpan absurdity of good satire even when the sentences around them sag. This is not a disciplined book. It is, however, an unmistakably singular one — nobody else was going to write QuBit, or Dr. Phở-nomenal, or this particular fusion of bonobo ethology and utopian polyamory. That imaginative audacity is the real thing, and it's what earns this recognition.
